Country Football WA has appointed its first female president, with Mel Sulzberger elected to the role at Tuesday night’s Board Meeting. 

Sulzberger joined the CFWA board in 2023 and brings over a decade of involvement in Albany’s country football community. Her extensive volunteer experience includes roles such as Auskick Coordinator, President of Southern Districts Junior Football, and team manager of the U16s Royals Football Club (Albany). 

Sulzberger’s extensive experience spans various sports across the country, including serving on club committees in South Australia and Victoria. She recognises the vital role sporting clubs, especially football clubs, play in regional areas. 

“I love country sport, it’s been my life,” Sulzberger said. 

“I am excited to witness the progress of Country Football WA as we step into 2024 and beyond.  

“With our newly appointed board members, alongside our seasoned members who bring invaluable connections and expertise, we’re ready to kickstart a fresh chapter of success and growth for Country Football WA.” 

Newly appointed board member Andrew Lockyer has been elected as the Vice President. 

Lockyer is a three-time premiership player with East Fremantle in the WAFL and played 76 games for the West Coast Eagles.  

The recent appointments come in the wake of a governance restructure, with the board now overseeing both junior and senior regional football leagues, reflecting a commitment to broader representation and inclusivity within the leadership.  

“This is a great opportunity for our board to build relationships and reach the best outcomes for our senior and junior football leagues by supporting our volunteers, aligning the football pathways and programs for our men’s and women’s competition and promoting an inclusive environment,” Sulzberger said.
